Getting Around

Grab a map and get ready to explore the Tampa/St. Petersburg area! With a little background knowledge you'll be able to easily navigate from your temporary housing in Tampa and take advantage of all the city has to offer.

Public Transportation

The Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority operates Tampa's streetcar and bus services. Referred to as the HARTline, Tampa temporary housing residents can use this mass transit option to get around the metropolitan area. Residents can also use the TECO Line Streetcar System, which links Ybor (pronounced E-bor) City, the Channel District and Downtown Tampa. This streetcar offers a slower pace and is better served for traveling around the town on a weekend.

Additionally, Tampa temporary housing residents can ride Amtrak from Tampa Union Station to destinations across the country.

Driving

The majority of Tampa residents travel around town by car. Both Tampa and St. Petersburg have relatively easy-to-follow roads, laid out in a typical grid format. St. Petersburg (located on the Pinellas Peninsula) and Tampa are connected by three main bridges: the Gandy Bridge, the Howard Frankland Bridge and the Courtney Campbell Causeway (the most traveled bridge). And the area's most famous bridge, the Sunshine Skyway, connects St. Petersburg to Sarasota and Bradenton in the south.

Major highways around Tampa include:

  • I-75: A main artery in Florida, this highway runs north/south to the east of Tampa
  • I-275: Runs north/south through along western Tampa and St. Petersburg (parallels I-75). I-275 runs across the Sunshine Skyway.
  • Hwy 19: A north/south highway, this road also runs across the Sunshine Skyway.
  • Hwy 92: Known as Dale Mabry Highway, this route runs east and west, from Tampa to Orlando and all the way to Daytona Beach.

Plan on renting a car while in your temporary housing? Tampa has several car rental agencies, such as Enterprise, Avis and Hertz, for you to rent the car of your choice, whether it is a SUV, sedan or truck.

Taxicabs

Hillsborough County is home to 14 taxicab companies, which operate over 500 cabs ready to serve those in temporary housing in Tampa. Taxicabs are a great way to get around downtown, to the airport and other destinations. In Tampa, most residents call for a taxicab instead of hailing one. If you are without a phone, simply head to a major place of congregation (i.e. hotel, bus station, cruise terminal) and you should be able to wait in line for a cab.

Limousines

If you want plan an extra-special night in Tampa while in your temporary housing or perhaps just need to catch a ride to the airport, Tampa's limousines will transport you to your destination in style. Limousines should be registered under Tampa's Public Transportation Commission. Some of Tampa's limousine agencies include VIP Limousine Inc., Royal Limousines, Alpha Limousine Service and many more.

Airports

Going on a business trip or a weekend get-away from your Tampa temporary housing? If you need to fly out of Tampa, you'll most likely use Tampa International Airport. Transporting over 17 million passengers a year, this centrally located airport ranks high among U.S. airports. For additional options, Tampa's temporary housing residents can also fly out of St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport, which is located southwest of Tampa, on the Pinellas Peninsula.

Now you know how to get around from your Tampa temporary housing. Keep reading to find more about:
