Getting Around

Dallas is a great city – so head out and enjoy it! Temporary housing residents in Dallas have many options when it comes to transportation. They can use the city’s public transportation system, drive or even fly to get around while in their Dallas temporary housing.

Public Transportation

To get around the Dallas area from your temporary housing, you can take advantage of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit, or DART, which provides bus and rail services among 13 cities. The light rail service opened in 1996 and operates two rail lines throughout Dallas. Rail lines connect from Oak Cliff to Plano and from South Dallas to Garland. More lines are also planned to be opened in the future. You can also hop on a bus to transport you from your Dallas temporary housing to locations throughout the city.

Additionally, the Trinity Railway Express connects Dallas to Fort Worth and to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport through its train service. For those looking to travel further from Dallas, you can check out Greyhound Bus Lines or on Amtrak’s Texas Eagle train.

Driving

If you plan on bringing a car to your Dallas temporary housing, it will help to learn some of the major roads in the area. There are many well maintained highways in Dallas which carry residents in and out of the city on a daily basis. The roads in Dallas fall in a “hub and spoke” arrangement in which there is one loop around the city with several highways leading to its center. Some of these roads to take note of include:

  • Interstate 20: This highway runs east and west in the southern Dallas area and continues on to western Texas and eastward to South Carolina.

  • Interstate 30: Also known as the Tom Landry Freeway between Dallas and Fort Worth, this interstate runs from Fort Worth to North Little Rock in Arkansas.

  • Interstate 35E: This 97 mile long route serves Dallas and connects towns north and south of the city.

  • Interstate 45: Located within Texas, this highway begins south of Dallas and continues on to Galveston, Texas.

  • Interstate 635: This road, known as the Lyndon B. Johnson loop, partially circles downtown Dallas between Interstate 20 and Texas State Highway 121.

  • U.S. 67: Northern and southern Dallas are connected with this highway, which runs from Iowa to the Mexico border.

  • U.S. 75: This north/south highway runs from Canada all the way down through Texas. After going through Dallas, the road is known as Interstate 45.

  • U.S. 80: This highway runs east and west across Texas and, on a larger scale, connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean.

  • U.S. 175: This road begins in Dallas and runs eastward, connecting the central and eastern parts of the state.

  • Loop 12: This beltway around Texas is the only highway that completes a loop around the entire city and runs through the closer Dallas suburbs.

  • Texas 114: This state highway runs from the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex area westward where it meets with New Mexico.

  • Texas Spur 366: Also known as the Woodall Rodgers Freeway, this highway connects east and west, separating downtown Dallas from its northern suburbs.

  • Dallas North Tollway: This highway connects from Dallas’ suburbs north and south of the city. All toll booths have electronic toll collection and main plazas have TollTag express lanes.

And if you prefer to rent a car during your stay in temporary housing, Dallas has many options for you. Rental car agencies carry everything from sedans to SUVs, so whatever your preference, you can drive around town in your choice of vehicle.
