Getting Around
Whether you are headed out to a game at Wrigley
Field, going shopping on the Magnificent Mile
or commuting each morning into the city, it's
good to know your options when it comes to getting
around. Chicago has a vast public transportation
system, many highways and surrounding airports
to get you around to wherever you need to go!
Public Transportation
Chicago operates the second largest public transportation
system in America (second only to New York's system).
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) runs buses
and rapid transit cars (including the elevated
trains) throughout Chicago and 40 of its surrounding
suburbs. Each day an average 1.6 million people
use the CTA system.
The CTA operates 2,000 buses and nearly 1,200
rapid transit cars, which run 24 hours a day.
In the city, the elevated trains are known as
the "Chicago L" or to Chicagoans as simply the
"El."
For additional public transportation options while
in your Chicago temporary housing, you can ride
the Metra commuter rail in from Chicago's outer
suburbs. With over 200 train stations, you can
ride Metra's Electric District Main Line from
Chicago's far south suburbs to the city's lakefront
attractions. Pace bus service also offers several
routes in the Chicago area.
Driving
The roads in Chicago are set up in an easy-to-follow
grid system, a relief for those who are just learning
their way around the city. Many directions and
roads in Chicago are in relation to the Loop.
The Loop is actually a neighborhood in Chicago,
but is also generally referred elevated train
lines that circle Chicago and form a "beltway"
around the city. It's good for Chicago temporary
housing residents to have a general idea of the
Loop in order to get their directional bearing!
In driving around the city and its suburbs you
will find that there are seven major highways
that run nearby your temporary housing in Chicago.
Many of these highways are named after influential
political figures and are often referred to by
these names. These highways include:
Kennedy Expressway/I-90: This 16 mile long
highway runs from northwest of the Loop to O'Hare
International Airport.
Dan Ryan Expressway/I-90 and I-94: Runs from
the "Circle Interchange" with I-290 to the south
of the city where it meets with I-57.
Stevenson Expressway/I-55: This highway leads
from southwest Chicago to its suburbs.
Edens Expressway/I-94: This highway is the
main connection from Chicago to its nortern
suburbs.
Eisenhower Expressway/I-290: This highway
leads west from Chicago and crosses several
major highways, such as I-90 and I-355, on its
interchanges.
Bishop Ford Expressway: This portion of I-94
south of Chicago runs from to the I-57 split
south until it leaves the state.
Chicago Skyway: This toll road connects I-90
when it breaks off of the Dan Ryan Expressway
with the Indiana Toll Road.
I-57: This highway is not named, but serves
as a de-facto bypass route around the Stevenson
Expressway for travelers who are headed to Chicago.
